Where paid work exists, there are areas of Palestine where job opportunities for local women, including those holding university degrees, are still very few. This is the case in al-Khalil, the southern West Bank region, known in Hebrew and English as Hebron.
The ancient city of Al-Khalil / Hebron is cherished by Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike for its sacred site associated with the burial place of Abraham, known in Arabic as Ibrahim, a figure of shared reverence among the three traditions. It is also the most populous governorate of Palestine (nearly 885,000 people), and its local Colloquial Arabic, known as Khalili, is the most widely spoken variety of Palestinian Arabic.
